Sustainable solutions and fashion???

WASTE AND WANT

So I am full into design mode at the moment. It has completely taken over my life. Everything I do the design ideas are still there in the back of my mind I can't turn it off.

This industry for me is a constant battle between fast fashion and sustainable fashion.

The amount of waste produced by textiles every year is outrageous. On average in the UK 30kg of clothing per person ends up in landfills every year, to put it into perspective that's half my body weight in discarded clothing per person. I like to think that in NZ we might be a little more conscious about what we throw away? There are no exact stats that I am aware of in NZ and I just don't have the time right now to delve into a full study but I imagine that given we don't have the number of cheap chain stores as places like the UK have we surely can't be creating as much waste? Anyway food for thought- if we all spent a little less on fast fashion at chain stores and invested in decent NZ designer garments (that are more classic pieces that perhaps don't follow trends so much and are therefore more timeless) we would all be helping the environment and the NZ economy massively. We would be producing less waste, we would be reducing our carbon foot print and we would be creating more jobs for New Zealanders.

So based on the above here is my design philosophy (and the reason that I am constantly conflicted):
''Quality not quantity. Create classics that are modern but timeless. With everything I design I want to consider its longevity in a persons wardrobe''
